I was in Kudat town this morning on a business trip. We have some works to do here in Kudat Resthouse or Rumah Rehat Kudat in Bahasa Malaysia. The resthouse is situated at the North-West end of Padang Bandaran Kudat. The entrance to Kudat Resthouse is also facing SMK Pekan Kudat, one of the oldest government funded school in Kudat region.

Ok, so what on earth about this Kudat Resthouse? Well, I have two thing in mind in this blog post. Number one, I want to highlight that Kudat resthouse is one of the cheapest and also a good place to stay if you are visiting kudat. They have enough rooms, located within a walking distant to any places in Kudat town and affordable. In-house restaurant are also available in Kudat Resthouse. So if you don't have any transport to get around for meals you can always go into their in-house restaurant. 

So that is how good is Kudat Resthouse. However there are also a bad things and worth highlighting for you to take into account before you pop-in here in Kudat Resthouse.

If you need internet connection, they don't have internet connection. You will have to bring with you a mobile broadband(internet connection). I wonder why Kudat resthouse management do not think internet connection is important and could be one of the attraction for people to stay here.

The facilities in the resthouse are all the basic one. There are no shower head and TV are not connected to the power and of course no Astro. 

One more good thing about Kudat Resthouse is the staffs are all very helpful. For budget accommodation in Kudat, I would suggest you to try it out.

Pulau Banggi Sabah.

Pulau Banggi is one of the island worth visiting in Kudat region. Pulau Banggi is part of a group of islands located within the Kudat region and is off the northern coast of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. With an area of 440.7km square, it is the largest island in Malaysia followed by the islands of Langkawi and Penang. The area around Pulau Banggi has the second largest concentration of coral reefs in Malaysia and contains an important mix of habitats including mangroves, seagrasses and open sea providing safe haven for endangered animals such as turtles and the dugong.

The Sabah State Government has proposed Pulau Banggi, along with neighboring Pulau Balambangan, Pulau Malawali, Pulau Balak and Pulau Molleangan amongst others, for gazettement as the Tun Mustafa Park under the jurisdiction of Sabah Parks. This Kudat-Banggi conservation area forms the

southern half of the Balabic Straights which separate Borneo from the Philippines and is the meeting place of the Sulu and the South China Seas. The Tun Mustafa Park being over 1 million hectares will be the biggest marine protected area in Southeast Asia.

To reach the main town of Karakit on Pulau Banggi there are daily one hour ferry services that depart from the northern fishing town of Kudat. Kudat is a three hour drive from Kota Kinabalu – the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia.

Diving around Pulau Banggi is astounding and bursting with diversity, due to its proximity to the Balabic Straight Corridor the currents can provide more than a challenge. The corridor serves as a passageway for marine life forms from plankton to whalesharks and all the creatures in between such as dolphins, various species of sharks and whales, turtles, and shoals of oceanic fishes. Dive sites are encased in a stunning variety of corals such as gorgorian fans, bubble coral, staghorn, lettuce corals and many other hard and soft corals. Making their home in the corals are batfish, squid, shrimp, eels, nudibranchs and countless other creatures. There are several merchant ship wrecks in the area, two of which lay in 20-25m of water, and another that is laying at 50m. There are records of countless others just waiting to be discovered.

Thick virgin rainforest covers more than 70% of Pulau Banggi which is largely unaffected by development, and gorgeous white sand beaches wrap around most of the coastline. Over 20,000 people of various ethnicity call Pulau Banggi home. The main town on Pulau Banggi is the town of Karakit; here you will find the Bonggi Resort on the waterfront. They have basic rooms with fan and shared bathroom, or you can go a step up with air-con and attached bathroom. For the more adventurous, Banggi-style wooden huts are available and those who are both adventurous with no fear of heights can opt for the tree houses that present beautiful views of the sea and surrounding islands.

Pulau Banggi has something for everyone, be it lazing on the pristine beaches, wildlife and bird watching, jungle trekking, deep-sea fishing, island hopping, exploring local cultures, scuba diving snorkelling and swimming.

Things to buy in Kudat

Welcome to Kudat, while you are here and looking for something to buy to bring home here is several items that you can buy in Kudat. Kudat is well-known for these items.

Coconut

Kudat region is known as the main producer of coconut products in Sabah. In the past huge area of land was cleared and planted with coconut trees making it one of the main income source for the people in Kudat. Although most of the coconut plantation now are slowly being replaced with palm oil plantation but there are still many farmers growing coconuts trees for commercial purposes. You should buy coconut fruits while you are here and the price are considerably very much cheaper compared to those being sold in Kota Kinabalu.

Gong

As already mentioned  in this webpage, Kudat is well-known as a producer of Gongs. Gongs are produced in Kampung Sumangkap Gong Factory in Matunggung Kudat. Many sizes of Gongs are available for you to buy as souvenir. If you need your name embedded on the Gongs, you should inform the Gong makers prior to your arrival so that he has ample time to make the Gong according to your specifications and needs. Peanuts

Kudat Peanuts is one of the highly sought products in Kudat. Your visit to Kudat is not complete without a kilo or two of Kudat peanuts. You can buy it from Pasar Besar Kudat or Kudat Market. Once you are inside the Pasar Besar Kudat, ask any of the vendors there.  

Honey

Kudat is also well-known as Honey Bee producer in Sabah. You may visit Gombizau Honey Bee Farm in Kampung Gombizau, Matunggung to visit the honey bee  farm and to buy a bottle or two of fresh, fine and delicious honey.
